In a recent study, it was found that despite this sector being subject to many more medical and travel security risks than any others, companies do not always implement sufficiently rigorous prevention programmes.

 Within the sector, the likelihood of catching an infectious disease is 63% higher than other sectors worldwide – and perhaps more shockingly, the chance of imprisonment is 82% higher. These findings relate to the six characteristics defined in the study that companies within this sector share; presenting concern for employers in terms of legal and moral Duty of Care obligations.

The six characteristics include:

• Geographically remote worksites
• High risk security environments
• Safety culture
• Varying interpretations of risk
• A complex value chain (i.e. the make-up of a variety of different companies working together on a single project)
• Reputational risks

The study recommends ten Duty of Care practices to prevent and manage an accident, illness or security situation within this sector. By educating the industry’s operators on the importance of protecting their employees, they will see that the prevention and management of risk is less costly than dealing with an incident should the worst occur.

This study demonstrates the unique challenges the sector faces, while providing an insight into what can be done to ensure Duty of Care obligations are of consistent or improved quality.
