The control of use of intoxicants in the workplace is a broad-based approach incorporating policy education, transparency and deterrence.  It is essential that employers implement an Alcohol and Drug policy.

Some employees may be required to undergo routine (e.g. pre-placement) testing and  some may be required to take random testing (e.g. employees in safety critical roles).

The detection of novel psychoactive substances (NPS or ‘legal high’) and the free availability of prescription drugs over the internet is becoming a technical challenge and employers’ drug and alcohol policies may have to change and adapt to accommodate these changes.
